Hephaestus's ax in Zeus's skull is Athena's caesarean section. St. Thomas's fingers on the wounds of Jesus are the faith of Christians. Jürgen Brandes is devoured, digested and defecated by Armin Meiwes, as an act of loving consummation, as the surest attempt at a fusion between two bodies. Katie Stubblefield receives a face transplant three years after losing her face during a suicide rifle attempt; his face is now Andrea Schneider's, donated after falling into a coma.
All these stories have one point in common: the metamorphosis (like Ovid's), a physical but above all psychological transformation. A phenomenon that, although done, lives perpetually on the object and manifests itself as a spell on the viewer
